One of the most beautiful mountains close to Bucharest that can be approached by any outdoor passionate regardless of his/her experience is, no doubt about this, Ciucas. Reaching the summit of this mountain (1954), while not that taxing in terms of physical effort is a true reward. The strange rock formations that we need to pass by invite to admiring pauses and the view from the top on clear days … well, you have to come to see it yourself.

Day 1

We depart from Bucharest at 7.00 in the morning and head, by car, towards the mountain resort Cheia in the county of Prahova which lies at the foot of Ciucas massif. After around 21/2 hours we arrive at the starting spot of the route, on Valea Berii (the Valley of the Beer).

Leaving the car(s) behind, we follow the river valley, through a pleasant forest, while slowly gaining height thus having time enough to warm our muscles. After an hour of such easy walk we put a half an hour bigger effort to reach the cabin of Ciucas. This is where we take 15 minutes brake because the view opens up and we can buy and enjoy a tea.

From this point we have 11/2 hours up to the summit on a more sustained path. The rocks of Ciucas are in full view and we will be passing just below them. Finally we reach the summit (1954) and enjoy the view. If the sky is clear, we will see the neighboring mountains as well as the big city of Brasov.

We return to the cabin by following another route which allows us to see some more of the fascinating rocks of Ciucas.

At the cabin we stop for a fully deserved late lunch. We will be then heading down to the car, expecting to get there the latest at 17.00.

We estimate to arrive in Bucharest by 20.00-21.00, depending on the traffic.
