Perhaps Bucegi massif owns the most known mountain landmarks of Romania:
- The weird rocks sculpted by wind called the Old Ladies (Babele) and the Sphynx.
- The high cross of Caraiman which guards from high above the mountain resorts of the Prahova Valley and which was raised during the inter-wars period for commemorating the loss of lives in the first one of these.
- Its highest peak, Omu, which at 2507m altitude stands as one of the highest peaks of Romania.
For sure this mountain, if it is not the most known is the most circulated one.

We start early from Bucharest so as to avoid the morning traffic jam and to be as much as possible in the outdoors and not in the city. At 8.30 we will be in Busteni mountain resort from where we will take the cable car which will take us in about 20 minutes to more than 2000m altitude. This is the place where we start the hike.
Just 10 minutes from the station of the cable car our first objectives of the day come in sight: the Old Ladies group of rocks and the Sphynx. This last one is a rock which resembles a human face looked from a certain side of it. Wonders that only wind can make!
We continue along the beautiful mountain plateau of Bucegi towards the cross of Caraiman from where we will have at our feet the entire valley of Prahova with the busy traffic of the most circulated road of Romania, which links Bucharest and Brasov.
From there we go for the highest peak of the mountain (Omu – 2507m). The view there is gorgeous: four big glaciated valleys sided by terrific walls start from around the peak. On top of the peak stands a mountain hut where we can have lunch.
It is time for a decision of yours. If you are still fit and earning for more of the trails, we can head down directly from Omu peak on the beautiful valley of Cerbului (Deer), but this will take us some extra hours. If not, we will return to the cable car station in a couple of hours and go back Busteni the way we came.
